Dear Mr Cameron
I am writing to you both as my MP and as the leader of the Conservative party. I
am 25 years old and although I voted not long after turning 18 I have not voted
since. The reason for this is that who is currently in power, by and large,
makes little to no different to the day to day running of my life. I will still
get up, go to work, pay my taxes and go back to bed. Sainsburys will still be
there to buy my food from, petrol will continue to cost more and I will never be
able to buy my own house.
I think the things that matter in life are the smaller things, if you can change
these then that’s what will make people get out and vote. Such an example is a
fine I recently received for unintentionally driving in a bus lane in London,
for less than 100 yards, while lost, on a Sunday, at 2pm. I am being fined for
making a small mistake with insignificant consequences (I held up no busses, I
made no progress over other drivers, I wasn’t even in a hurry to get anywhere)
and although I can write to make representations against the fine, I was told by
the TfL telephone helpline operator I would just be wasting my time.
Everyone I have spoken to thinks this is unfair, everyone also agrees with me
that fines such as mine should be subjected to some consideration for
circumstances. If everyone thinks this, why isn’t it, after all, we are meant to
live in a democracy where the majority opinion determines the rules.
If you were to win the next general election, would you change the way that
fines such as these are issued to allow the issuer the decide if the fine is
really appropriate, given circumstances, instead of having to follow inflexible,
set in stone rules which allow for no such considerations? While there are many
other small things that could be changed to make a big difference, if you can
make this one change it will motive me to go and vote. If however you can’t,
then I have better things to be doing than wasting my time in a polling station.
In the mean time, anything you can do to have the fine cancelled would be most
appreciated.
Thank you for your time and good luck fighting that Scottish oaf who’ll soon be
heading up our country.
